Located at the confluence of the Mekong and Xe Don rivers, Pakse is the capital of Champasak Province and the beating heart of southern Laos. Though it may seem like a sleepy riverside town at first glance, Pakse is a strategic hub for adventure, culture, and culinary exploration in Laos’ less-traveled regions.
Founded by the French in the early 20th century, Pakse retains vestiges of colonial architecture, tree-lined streets, and a mix of French, Chinese, and Lao cultural influences. But more importantly, it’s the launchpad to a variety of spectacular experiences: the fertile Bolaven Plateau, thundering Tad Fane waterfalls, sprawling coffee farms, and the majestic Wat Phou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site often dubbed the "Angkor Wat of Laos."
The town itself is modest and easy to navigate, offering riverside promenades, colorful markets, temples, and traditional noodle shops. As tourism in the region grows slowly and sustainably, visitors will find authentic experiences untouched by mass tourism.
Pakse is ideal for those seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures, coffee-fueled road trips, and quiet moments in nature. From waterfall loops to heritage ruins, Pakse offers a perfect balance between action and reflection.
